Portfolio Version 2.0b

Assignment 5: I have designed an alternative layout for my portfolio page using image slices created in Adobe ImageReady and Photoshop. My current portfolio uses an image map, but this new design uses image slices. Some of the slices change when you roll over them with your mouse, and some of them link to pages on or outside of the the site. The content within the this portfolio design loads into an inline frame.

I created the text border using the paths and the text tool. I would like to use more color in this design, but still keep it simple. Being colorblind, it usually takes me a while to find an appropriate color scheme for a design, so I tend to begin work with limited colors and mostly shades of gray.

Fall 2004

Today was one of the most beautiful days I've seen in a while. The sun was out in full force this morning, flanked by a bright blue sky and whispy, white clouds! I decided I would bring my camera along with me that day in case I stumbled upon something beautiful.

On the way to work with Jess, we crossed the lawn of Old Main. It was a beautiful sight. People were bustling all around us, while other students were relaxing in the sun. I snapped this shot of stately Old Main with the beautiful sky that was framing that afternoon.

I hope we still get some more days like this before the snow comes... My new Nikon Coolpix 4800 was just ordered this weekend, and I can't wait to try it out!

Schwab Auditorium at University Park

The Schwab Auditorium is probably my favorite structure on campus here at Penn State. It looks like something I would build out of Legos. I prefer structures with an older appearance as opposed to the brand new buildings like the one that the School of IST just built. Schwab appears strong and has much character. The IST Building looks very fashionable, but it lacks the kind of character and boldness I see in the Schwab structure.

The complete Beethoven quartets are to be performed here this Fall and Winter over the course of six performances by the likes of the American String Quartet, Kiss Quartet, Ying Quartet, Ysaye, and others. It's certainly an event to check out!

Shadows and Light

This photograph is part of the Jour de la Photographie collection that I put together last month. This photo is probably the centerpiece of that collection.

As posted on GoCarlo.com:

When I woke up this afternoon, I decided it was le jour de la photographie. I set out with my faithful sidekick, Drew, to absorb this lovely day in all its sunshiney ways. On our way to a location to begin shooting, our poor navigation skills got the best of us and led us the wrong way. Our mistake worked to our advantage. We were accidently led to a beautiful area down the road from the Penn State campus next to a mansion circa 1860. C’etait parfait pour nos jour de la photographie!

So after a couple hours of shooting, we ran out of the "magic light" and had to retire. But before we did, we captured some incredible lights and shadows cast from miscellaneous objects. This photo illustrates that concept perfectly. Click here to check out the entire Jour de la Photographie collection.

Pollock Leaves

I took this picture on the first beautiful weekend we had this Fall. The sky was vivid and the quad was drenched in sunlight. Geoff and I took off with our cameras in-hand to capture the day in all its spleandor.

Cole had just given me a new video camera the day before and told me to "learn it." So I took that out with me and captured many of the photos that day on the video camera.

I intended to use the photos from this day to create another motionshow like I did with John Cage's Sonata I for Prepared Piano. I still haven't gotten around to completing that one. I'm still arranging the photos and still finding just the right soundtrack. I'm leaning towards something from The Postal Service.

Anyway, this picture was taken by me while standing under one of the prettiest trees in the Pollock quad, Pollock Leaves. I positioned the leaves almost directly between the sun and me, so they look aglow. I like how the overlapping leaves give the light and color different intensities.

Pollock Leaves

Alright, here's the rundown on this place now that it's pretty much up and running. This image log is another site connected to my domain GoCarlo.com, just like my blog, Le Blog GoCarlo. This site is similar to my blog, except that La Galerie will focus on images and design.

I have been required to create this log for my Art 201 course. I will post two images in this log each week, and provide commentary on them for the rest of the semester and perhaps even beyond that.
